Description

HISTORIC CHATEAU

Sole agency, a landmark of regional architectural heritage, this château in southern Gironde is a magnificent medieval residence perched on a promontory overlooking the Garonne valley. Its construction dates back to the 15th century, around 1480, on the initiative of the lords of Castets en Dorthe, in a flamboyant Gothic style.

Owned by the same family since 1594, the property comprises two buildings forming a right angle, flanked by several towers — notably a richly decorated hexagonal tower to the east and a rectangular tower housing a chapel on the north-east corner.

The castle’s surroundings are remarkable: gardens, ancient trees, ponds and fountains create a landscape of great beauty.

The facades and roofs of the castle, as well as its dovecote, were listed as Historic Monuments by decree on 4 August 1978.

THE CHATEAU
Ground floor
An entrance tower, at the corner of two wings at right angles, houses a remarkable 15th-century spiral staircase.
On one side, it leads to a private area consisting of a 46 m² library lounge, opening onto a family dining room and kitchen, as well as a chapel.

On the left, the south wing consists of a series of corner lounges (56 m²), a billiard room (51 m²) with walls decorated with Cordoba leather, a lounge and dining room for receptions (42 and 52 m²), an office, and other rooms including pantries and a large kitchen of 36 m² with a large fireplace.

The upper floor, measuring approximately 400 m², is accessed via several staircases and comprises a dozen bedrooms of varying sizes, all with en-suite bathrooms.

The second floor, measuring just over 300 m², continues in the same spirit as the lower floors: several spacious bedrooms, some around 30 m², with en-suite bathrooms, others more modest but still cosy. A small kitchen on this floor, as well as landings and corridors, complete this top floor.

The estate also benefits from a particularly large set of outbuildings, covering approximately 1,300 m². These include a former stable converted into a 160 m² reception room, two orangery buildings measuring 250 and 300 m², a barn of around 150 m², a 17th-century dovecote, a former cowshed, as well as a woodshed, a workshop with a bread oven, a garage, an ice house and a laundry room with a large fireplace. Some of the roofs have been renovated, while others are awaiting repair.

The château features many authentic decorative elements: parquet flooring, mouldings, fireplaces, wood panelling, panels, etc.
It requires extensive renovation to bring it up to contemporary standards and comfort levels.
