Description

Listed Renaissance Château – 14-Hectare Estate in Lot-et-Garonne

Just a few kilometres from Aiguillon, in the heart of the Garonne Valley, Château de Longuetille emerges from behind its majestic trees as an exceptional example of Renaissance noble architecture.

Built in the 16th century on the foundations of an earlier fortified manor house, and subsequently adapted to the comforts of the 18th and 19th centuries, this remarkable architectural ensemble has retained much of its original character. Its circular towers crowned with conical roofs, stone and brick façades, ancient arrow slits, and remains of its moats and drawbridge bear witness to its defensive origins.

Arranged around an enclosed inner courtyard of approximately 340 sqm, the château offers nearly 500 sqm of living space over two floors, together with an attic offering further conversion potential.

The ground floor comprises an entrance hall, spacious reception rooms, several sitting rooms, kitchens and various service rooms. Upstairs, the original layout provides access to seven or eight bedrooms and a number of additional rooms.

Inside, traditional French beamed ceilings, original flooring, wooden and spiral staircases, and numerous monumental fireplaces reflect five centuries of history. One of the principal rooms features an exceptional Renaissance fireplace surmounted by a painted panel depicting the Annunciation, an artistic feature of particular significance.

The outbuildings add considerably to the character and potential of the estate. They include approximately 270 sqm of ancillary buildings, incorporating a multi-storey square tower, an open-sided shelter of approximately 110 sqm, a substantial traditional Gascon agricultural building known as a coucoute, measuring approximately 250 sqm, as well as a historic icehouse and a well.

The estate extends over 14 hectares, 34 ares and 80 centiares (approximately 14.35 hectares), comprising mature parkland, an orchard and agricultural land currently made available under a commodat (gratuitous loan-for-use agreement).

Its magnificent trees, historic vistas and landscaped grounds offer considerable potential to restore this exceptional property to its former splendour.

A Château Closely Linked to the History of France

In December 1621, during Louis XIII’s military campaign against the Protestant strongholds of southwestern France, the King established his headquarters at Longuetille following the capture of Monheurt.

It was here, on 15 December 1621, that Charles d’Albert, Duke of Luynes, Constable of France and the young King’s favourite and principal adviser, died. His death preceded the rise of Cardinal Richelieu and marked a turning point in the political history of the kingdom.

For a few days, this noble residence in the Agenais region became one of the places where the destiny of France was being shaped.

This exceptional historical significance, combined with the architectural quality of the property, led to its official listing as a French Historic Monument (Monument Historique) on 11 June 2015.

An Outstanding Heritage Restoration Opportunity

The château and its outbuildings now require an extensive programme of restoration. Their authenticity, generous proportions and architectural coherence offer a wide range of possibilities: a prestigious family residence, an exclusive venue for private events, or a hospitality, tourism or cultural project, subject to the necessary planning permissions and heritage approvals.

The parkland could regain its historic vistas, the outbuildings could be given new purposes, and the surrounding land could contribute to the landscape restoration of the entire estate.

Set in a peaceful rural environment, close to the Canal de Garonne and its scenic cycling route, the château enjoys convenient access to the A62 motorway, approximately 6 kilometres away, and is around 1 hour and 10 minutes from Bordeaux Airport, depending on traffic conditions.

Acquiring Château de Longuetille is far more than purchasing a château. It is an opportunity to become the custodian of a remarkable chapter of French history, to breathe new life into it and to preserve it for future generations.

A rare property for those who appreciate history, architecture and distinguished historic residences.
